THE LORE

Biblical Borith

A soap of biblical proportions.

Soapmaking in the Middle East is old, really old. Archaeologists have found soap-like residue in clay cylinders from ancient Babylon dating to roughly 2800 B.C., describing fats boiled with ash.

The Bible references a cleansing substance called “borith,” a generic Hebrew term for something made from the ashes of plants. No exact recipe survives, so this bar was built from ingredients that would have been at home in that ancient world.

Dead Sea mud gives the bar its mineral character. Frankincense, a prized ancient trade good, brings its warm resinous perfume. Cedarwood supplies the dry, woody base, and olive oil ties it back to the ancient Mediterranean.
