THE LORE
"Thieves Oil" is one of the most enduring legends in the essential oil world. As the story goes, during a wave of the Bubonic Plague in 15th-century Europe, a band of thieves made a living robbing the bodies of plague victims — and somehow never caught the disease themselves. Cornered and questioned, they supposedly credited their survival to a blend of aromatic oils they rubbed on before every job.
The legend is almost certainly more colorful than the truth. But there was a reason ingredients like cinnamon and clove kept turning up in old apothecaries. Long before anyone knew what a bacterium was, both spices had reputations that went far beyond making things smell good. They appeared in traditional preparations for cleansing, preserving, soothing, and all manner of household remedies.
Modern laboratory research has made that history even more interesting. Aromatic compounds found in cinnamon and especially clove — including eugenol — have been studied for their antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties.
