Archaeologists have found soap-like residue in clay cylinders from ancient Babylon dating to roughly 2800 B.C., describing fats boiled with ash. The Bible itself references a cleansing substance called "borith," a generic Hebrew term for something made from the ashes of plants - no exact recipe survives, so we built ours from ingredients that would have been right at home in that ancient world.

Real Dead Sea Mud, rich in minerals, gives the bar its distinctive character. Frankincense - one of the most famous substances in the Bible and a prized trade good throughout the ancient world - lends its warm, resinous perfume. Cedarwood, deeply significant throughout biblical history, rounds things out with a dry, woody base, and organically grown olive oil ties it all back to the ancient Mediterranean. Finally, I add orange for a little brightness. The oranges I use smell fantastic and give the darker, earthier fragrances a fresh citrus lift.

For another ancient-world ingredient story, continue with Silk Road Sandalwood's aromatic trade inspiration.

Yes, it's a soap of biblical proportions.

Want the full product story? See the Biblical Borith story →

J.D.
