As the story goes, during a wave of the Bubonic Plague in 15th-century Europe, a band of thieves made a living robbing the bodies of plague victims - and somehow never caught the disease themselves. Cornered and questioned, they supposedly credited their survival to a blend of aromatic oils they rubbed on before every job.

The legend is almost certainly more colorful than the truth. But there was a reason ingredients like cinnamon and clove kept turning up in old apothecaries.
